I heard this phrase this week recently.
This has been happening for a long time and it's going to continue. Stores have known about this for a long time and there were a lot of people that have had anxiety about it. I never thought that I would actually be one of those who would abandon physical stores to buy goods...but I am. The market for retailers was extremely bloated. Having worked in that industry the most maybe I should be worried about it...but I'm not. Change is inevitable and while there are people who are negatively impacted...over all it's a good thing. Less Retail Jobs Is Good Not everyone can handle a retail job. Going to a store and standing in line to buy what you want to get is not fun. There is always someone in line in front of you that takes forever, either because they want to use a million coupons or argue over a price that takes forever. The Checkers act like robots. That's how companies teach their employees to behave. They can't defend themselves or their company...only the manager can speak for the company and most the time they are taught "the customer is always right" and keep the customer even if the customer is carrying out stolen product. That makes it hard for employees to care about the company. The employees are made to look same- there are very strict rules about the uniform, hair style, and other personal grooming. This arises from the fact they want the employee to be easily identifiable so there is a good reason. There is no reason to be friendly with customers. Most people are so toxic that being friendly to them invites abuse. Checkers quickly learn not to ask people how they are because it opens up the door to nonsense complaints. That's mostly a society thing that focuses on criticizing everyone...we are encouraged to find something to criticize and report on it because "that feedback is important." No one respects retail employees either. They are considered a lower class group of people. I think Fast Food workers are the least respected..retail workers are treated a tiny bit better. Fresh and Easy tried to get rid of that issue by letting people do the job of the checker. That didn't work. People might think that people crave human interaction with that failure...but the fact people will choose to buy something online instead blows that concept out of the water. Buying Online Is Less Risky I had a huge skepticism of buying things online...until I was on bed rest. I couldn't go to the store and walk around to shop. I found that it was a far better experience. In a store it feels a little like an Easter Egg hunt to find things you want. You're limited to their current stock items. To compare items you sometimes have to carry something from one side of the store to another...then debate about returning the other item to the other side of the store or leave it for an employee to put back. Stores are always moving things around. This is partly to keep things interesting for customers and partly due to deals with the brands that they sell. Plus they are usually a season ahead which can be confusing and distracting. Online you can look for the best deals and search an entire category of items. You can also go to other stores and compare them to the first store very easily. Then you have them delivered. Most places also have it set up so you can return the items easily if you decide that you don't want them. Further, a lot or places like BuyBuyBaby will ship for free if you buy a reasonable amount of stuff. Warehouses Are Better Than Storefronts I've worked both jobs. I prefer working at a warehouse than retail. Previously it was less likely to get that job. There is a lot of competition because you don't have to deal with the customer. That area of job opportunity is great. That will lead to people having less stress in their lives. Warehouses could be the new factory environment. That's a far more preferable environment then the tons of retail jobs in stores. Companies will probably end up saving money...but the same amount of employees will probably be employed. There will just be more drivers. I really can't say anything about about this scenario. Conclusion Goodbye to most of the retail environment. I don't think they will be entirely wiped out- Walmart, Target and maybe a couple grocery stores will survive...same with the 7/11's. As for the majority of it... I won't miss it.
